If your business sells products or services using a website, you’ll need a payment gateway to receive digital payments. A payment gateway integrates with your website’s shopping cart to accept and encrypt customer card details. It then authenticates the details and payment, before moving the money into your settlement account.
Customers purchase goods or services using your website. Once they proceed to pay, they enter their credit or debit card details and are authenticated. The money is temporarily held to allow for authorisation and fraud checks, before being moved into your linked settlement account.

You can setup your eCommerce platform with EMV 3D Secure. Doing so will mean customers’ card details are authenticated and you have increased protection against fraud-related disputes and chargebacks. EMV 3D Secure also uses tokenisation so that card details are securely stored.
Your payment gateway host (e.g. a bank) securely manages the card data so you don’t have to.
EMV 3D Secure (3DS 2) checks a number of data points to identify and authenticate customers. Based on the calculated transaction risk, the cardholder may be prompted to verify their ID eg. with a one-time password or biometric authentication using your banking app.

2 Same-day settlement is available on all EFTPOS transactions made before 9.30pm (Sydney/Melbourne time) and all eCommerce transactions made before 5:30pm (Sydney/Melbourne time) for eligible customers with a CommBank Business Transaction Account and a linked CommBank merchant facility.
3 24/7 support is available for general enquires only. Technical support is only available 7am–7pm (Sydney/Melbourne time).
4 A Business Transaction Account is required to settle your transactions, if you apply online through NetBank. You can choose to settle your transactions to an alternate account held with us or another financial service provider by calling our Merchant Payment Solutions team on 1800 730 554, any time after your application is finalised.
