Our programs

We’re looking for graduates and summer interns from a wide range of disciplines who are passionate about developing their skills, taking hold of opportunities and meeting the needs of our customers.

What can you expect as a graduate or summer intern?

  • Contribute from day one: You’ll be given real work that impacts our business and our customers.
  • Receive training and development: You’ll receive group-wide training and business area-specific training, plus attend formal training for technical and soft-skill development.

Where are the roles located?

Most of our roles are located in Sydney, with some opportunities available in regional areas.

How does the Graduate Program work?

You’ll start with us in February, but the length of your program varies based on which business area you choose. Read about our different business areas to see which one is right for you.

Your time at CommBank will begin with a 3-day forum where you can hear from senior leaders, receive market-leading training and meet your fellow graduates. During your first year, we’ll hold two more forums to develop your skills, expand your networks and have fun.

Every business area offers a rotational program. Rotations will help you to  learn about the different areas of the business and  decide where you want to take your career.

How does the Summer Intern Program work?

Our 10-week program gives you a taste of what it’s like to work with Australia’s best bank. You’ll be given full support and training to help you decide if CommBank is the right fit for you.

Being such a large and diverse business, we have a vast range of opportunities for you to choose from. Each of our business areas has its own program, so make sure you get to know them all so you can apply for the right one.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for our 2015 Graduate Program, you must:

  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or permanent resident at the time of application
  • Be completing your undergraduate degree in 2014, or have completed a university undergraduate or postgraduate degree in the 12 months prior
  • Have achieved at least a credit result in your degree

To be eligible to apply for our Summer Program, you must:

  • Be in your penultimate year of an undergraduate degree
  • Have achieved at least a credit result in your degree

Applications for our 2015 Graduate Programs are now closed.

Applications for our Summer Intern Program will open in July 2014.

Application process

Here’s the application and assessment process for both our Graduate and Summer Intern Programs:

Online application > Online testing > Telephone interview > Assessment centre > Offer


Step 1: Submit your application online

Select up to two business areas that match your skills and interests then fill in the online application. Find out more about our business areas.

Step 2: Complete online assessments

If you’re successful during our screening process, we’ll ask you to complete a series of online assessments during our recruitment process to make sure we’re a perfect match!

Step 3: Telephone interview

If your assessment results look good, we’ll call you to talk about your skills and your desire to work for us.

Step 4: Attend one of our Assessment Centres

Next, you’ll need to complete an come along to one of our Assessment Centres where you’ll take part in a group exercise and interview with a senior business leader.  If you’ve got any questions about the program, this is a great time to ask.

Please note that this stage of the recruitment process may vary for roles based outside of New South Wales.

Step 5: Your offer

If you’re a successful applicant we’ll call you within 48 hours with the exciting news and give you all the information you need to make a decision that’s right for you.

A couple of tips:

  • Be prepared. Make sure you’ve done your research and can tell us why you’re interested in a career at CommBank.
  • Show us your skills. At each stage of the process, be prepared to talk about your skills and experience, whether from university, work or in the community. We want to know all about your experience so we can find the best role for you.

Heading in to our Assessment Centre?

Make sure you:

  • Dress professionally
  • Arrive at least 10 minutes early
  • Do your research and be prepared
  • Ask questions   
  • Relax and be yourself.

Program eligibility

What visa requirements do I need to apply?

You must have Australian/New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency to apply. 

What if I am still waiting on my work visa/residency?
You must have permanent residency or be eligible to work permanently in Australia or New Zealand at the time of application.

Do you need a credit average to apply?
Yes. A minimum of 65% grade point average will be considered.

I have already graduated. Can I still apply for the Graduate Program?
To be eligible for the graduate program you must have completed a university undergraduate or postgraduate degree in the past 12 months.

I am studying a postgraduate degree. Can I still apply for the Graduate Program?
Yes, we accept applications from undergraduate or postgraduate students.

What happens to my application if I need to complete one or two subjects next year?
Unfortunately you won’t be eligible to apply for the graduate program, but you can apply the following year. If you are in the penultimate year of an undergraduate degree, you can apply for our summer internship program.

Do you only hire candidates with Commerce/Finance degrees?
No. We offer a range of graduate opportunities for a wide variety of disciplines, including, but not limited to: Business, Commerce, Economics, Finance, Accounting, Actuarial Studies, Marketing, Arts, IT, Computer Science, Human Resource Management, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics and Science. If your degree/major is not listed here, contact us to discuss which business unit might be right for you.

About the programs

What do you look for in a graduates and summer interns?

We look for well-rounded candidates who have successfully balanced university, work experience and extra-curricular activities. Other skills essential to working successfully with us include the ability to work in a team and a desire to learn and drive your own career. Most importantly, we look for your motivation to work in the Financial Services industry and with us.

How many graduates and summer interns do you take each year?
Our graduate program generally takes approximately 80 graduates each year and our summer internship program takes approximately 60 interns each year.

What are the start dates of the programs and how long do they run for?
The Graduate Program starts at the beginning of February. The length of each program varies depending on which business area you are interested in. The Summer Program runs for 10 weeks from December-February. 

What locations are you recruiting for?
The majority of our roles are Sydney based. We do have a small number of roles available in regional areas.

No. All applications must be submitted online.

I am currently working for CommBank but not on the Graduate Program. Is the application procedure for me different? What do I need to do to apply?
All applicants need to apply online and all applicants will go through the same recruitment process.

Assessment Centres

How can I prepare for the Assessment Centre?
It pays to be prepared! Do your homework before the Assessment Centre and find out everything you can about the program and us. Also, reflect on how your skills and experience match what we’re looking for. Click here to read more about our Assessment Centre process.

Do you help financially when travelling from interstate to an Assessment Centre?
Yes. We will assist in subsidising interstate travel to Assessment Centres. Available amounts will be discussed with each individual candidate.

Support

Do you help financially if I relocate to accept a role?
Yes. We will provide some assistance to graduates needing to relocate for their graduate program. Available amounts will be discussed with individual candidates.

What is the starting salary for graduates?
Our starting salary is competitive with the graduate market. We will discuss details of remuneration and our bonus structure throughout the recruitment process. We also offer rewards and benefits that do not make up the cash component of your salary, but still offer cost savings to you.

Do you offer support for graduates to complete further tertiary qualifications and training?
Yes. We support employees who want to enhance their professional development through tertiary study. This is something you would need to discuss with your manager, as you need to consider the benefit to the business and your ability to manage your work/life/study balance.

Can you travel overseas with Commonwealth Bank?
While we do have offices around the globe, the majority of our employees are based in Australia. However, in some cases our graduates will have the opportunity to work overseas. Read more about our business areas to find our more.
