Our Graduate & Summer Intern Programs

Our Graduate Program

Designed to attract the best and brightest, our Graduate Program is a challenging and rewarding way to kick-start a long-term career with us.

You’ll start with us in February, but the length of your Program varies based on which business area you choose.

Check out the degree map to learn more about where a career with us could take you, and to learn more about your business area.

Your time at CommBank will start with a thorough orientation, where you’ll hear from senior leaders, receive market-leading training and meet fellow graduates. During your first year, we’ll hold other conferences and master classes where you can develop your skills, expand your networks and have fun.

Every business area offers a rotational program. Rotations help you to learn about the different areas of our business and decide where you want to take your career.

As part of your Graduate Program, you will:

  • Contribute from day one: You’ll be given real work that impacts our business and our customers. Find out more.
  • Receive training and development: You’ll receive formal training for technical and soft skill development, both relevant to the whole Group and to your specific business area. Find out more.
  • Enjoy support and networking opportunities: You’ll have a mentor and a buddy to support you throughout your Program. You’ll also network with your fellow graduates/interns and with managers from across CommBank. Find out more.
  • Gain access to senior management: You’ll have unique access to senior leaders, and our graduates have the chance to enjoy a breakfast with our CEO and our Group Executives
  • Enjoy stability: Working at Australia’s largest bank, you benefit from fantastic offices with the latest technical innovations, corporate discounts and much more
  • Have the opportunity to give back: You’ll have the chance to contribute to the community by participating in our Graduate Committee and other community and volunteering initiatives. Find out about the recent diversity and inclusion event, Candid, that our Graduate Committee hosted in 2014.

Applications typically open in February, and the Program starts the following February. Check out this calendar of key dates for upcoming events.

We have roles available nationally (both metro and regional), although the majority of our roles are based in Sydney.

You should apply for our Graduate Program online. If your initial application is successful, you’ll have the chance to complete some online assessments, and then possibly visit one of our Assessment Centres for a face-to-face meeting with our team.

Frequently asked questions

About the Programs

What does CommBank look for in graduates and summer interns?
We look for well-rounded candidates who have successfully balanced university, work experience and extra-curricular activities. Other skills essential to working successfully with us include the ability to work in a team and a desire to learn and drive your own career. Most importantly, we look for your motivation to work in the financial services industry, and with us.

How many graduates and summer interns do you take each year?
Our Graduate Program generally takes approximately 100-140 graduates each year and our Summer Intern Program takes approximately 80-90 interns each year.

What are the start dates of the Programs and how long do they run for?
The Graduate Program starts in February. The length of each Program varies depending on which business area you are interested in. The Summer Intern Program runs for 10 weeks from December to February.

What locations are you recruiting for?
The majority of our roles are Sydney based. We do have a number of roles available in other cities and regional areas, generally across our Business and Private Banking business area.

Application and recruitment process

Can I apply for more than one business area?
We ask you to select one business area preference on your application form. To help you make this decision, we recommend you read about our different business areas in detail before applying.  If we read your application and think you’re a perfect fit for another area, we’ll give you a call to discuss.

When will you be visiting my university?
Please check out the key dates section above to find out when we will be visiting your university and running events.

What is the recruitment process?
You can read about our application process here.

What is the recruitment process timeline? When can I expect to hear from you?
We will keep in touch via email and free SMS (if you request this). We aim to be in touch with all candidates a week after the application closing date.

Can I send a hard copy of my resume or email my resume directly to you instead of applying online?
No. All applications must be submitted online.

I'm working for CommBank but not on the Graduate Program. Is the application procedure for me different? What do I need to do to apply?
All applicants need to apply online and all applicants will go through the same recruitment process.

Assessment Centres

How can I prepare for the Assessment Centre?
It pays to be prepared! Do your homework before the Assessment Centre and find out everything you can about the Program and us. Also, it’s worth reflecting on how your skills and experience match what we’re looking for.

Do you help financially when travelling from interstate to an Assessment Centre?
Yes. We will assist in subsidising interstate travel to Assessment Centres. Available amounts will be discussed with each individual candidate.

Support

Do you help financially if I relocate to accept a role?
Yes. We will provide some assistance to graduates needing to relocate for the Graduate Program. Available amounts will be discussed with individual candidates.

What is the starting salary for graduates?
Our starting salary is competitive with the graduate market. We will discuss details of remuneration and our bonus structure throughout the recruitment process. We also offer rewards and benefits that do not make up the cash component of your salary, but still offer cost savings to you.

Do you offer support for graduates to complete further tertiary qualifications and training?
Yes. We support employees who want to enhance their professional development through tertiary study. This is something you would need to discuss with your manager, as you need to consider the benefit to the business and your ability to manage your work/life/study balance.

Can I travel overseas with CommBank?
While we do have offices around the globe, the majority of our employees are based in Australia. However, in some cases our graduates will have the opportunity to work overseas.

How can I contact you?
Please get in touch via email at graduaterecruitment@cba.com.au and we’ll respond as soon as possible.
