Now you can use your ‘wearable’ smartwatch or fitness tracker to pay on the move.
Which workout wearables?
Wearables are becoming far more than just fitness trackers. Along with many other features, the newly launched Fitbit Ionic and Garmin Vivoactive 3 devices now enable you to make contactless payments.
CommBank customers can: You can add your CommBank credit or debit Mastercard to either device and leave your cards, cash and phone behind when you exercise. You can also track your spending with Transaction Notifications sent to the CommBank app.
How does it work?
Near field communication (NFC), enable devices to securely share info between one another - as long as they’re close together.
Both Fitbit Ionic and Garmin Vivoactive 3 devices have an NFC chip embedded into them, making it possible for you, at the flick of your wrist, to quickly pay for items using your smartwatch at a contactless terminal. Think Tap & Pay, only using your fitness tracker.
It only takes a few simple steps to set up and you can add more than one card to either device, choosing one as the ‘default’ which you can change at any time.
Is it secure?
Your card number is encrypted and replaced with an alternative number, called the Virtual Account Number. This protects your card details so they aren’t exposed to anyone other than you.
It means that when you make a contactless payment it’s this Virtual Account Number, not your actual card number, whoever you’re paying sees.
