CommBank smoothes Neil’s relocation to Australia

Name: Neil

Country of origin: The Philippines

CommBank customer since: November 2015

For Neil, moving to Australia on his own at the age of 21 is one of the most important decisions he has ever made in his life. It has always been his dream to work and live in Australia, to gain valuable overseas experience.

Originally from Quezon City in the Philippines, Neil who is a cook, relocated to Sydney in November 2015 to pursue his career at a Japanese restaurant in Chatswood, New South Wales.

While moving overseas can be exciting it can also be a little stressful. Not only do you need to sort out paperwork for your visa and flights, you may also have to look for accommodation, arrange shipping for your belongings, move a pet and transfer money to your destination country – and this is just a few of the things you might need to do.

There are many other errands to run, too, before your departure.

Sorting out your finances before your relocation is one of the key tasks you have to tick in your checklist.

To make his life easier, Neil’s migration agent helped him open a bank account with Commonwealth Bank while he was in his home country – allowing him to move money to Australia before he arrived.

When he arrived he simply needed to pop into branch to show his identification, making his account fully operational.

“When I got here, I just needed to sign some papers and received my debit card. It was easy. They processed most of it. I think it was fast,” he says.

Since then, Neil’s everyday banking needs have become significantly easier, as he chooses to use the award-winning CommBank app.

“In the Philippines, when you want to do some banking, you have to go to the bank. But here, it’s totally different. You can just use your phone and send money to someone to pay rent or anything, or just looking at your account balance.

“I’m enjoying the app. All the banking needs that I normally do on a daily basis – everything is in the app. It’s very, very convenient for me,” he adds.

Looking back at the past few months living in Sydney, Neil is thankful that both his work and personal lives have been fulfilling. The financial aspects of them are also in the good hands of Commonwealth Bank, a bank he says he “highly recommends” based on his stress-free and hassle-free experience.

“The guy who helped me sort out my account was very friendly and attentive. He guided me and explained to me what I needed to do, so I have a clear view of everything that’s happening,” he recalls.

Neil is looking forward to enjoying more of what Australia has to offer, and plans to possibly extend his work visa to stay longer.

“Considering the fact that Australia is a great nation to live and find a job especially in my field, it really caught my attention and made me take a risk to come here to pursue my dreams,” he says.

A risk well taken, we would say.
